We thank all participants and ambassadors of the Eigth Edition of the International Photography Competition “Mathematics in Focus”. This year’s edition set a new record, with more than 15,000 pictures submitted from all over the world. We plan to publish the results on the competition web site and on Facebook right after the jury meeting on November 24. The winners and those receiving a distinction will be informed by email or by phone. The reward ceremony will take place in Szczecin on December 8, 2017.

The photo competition is part of an international scientific-didactic project MATHEMATICS IN FOCUS. The first round of the competition took place in the year 2010. The organizer of this venture is the Department of Mathematics and Physics of the University of Szczecin. Initiator and director of the project is Professor Dr. hab. Małgorzata Makiewicz. The project consists of the photo competition, research in didactics of mathematics and comparative media research, cognitive and didactic publications, conferences, expositions, lectures for the public and workshops for students and teachers. Since the year 2010, the competition MATHEMATICS IN FOCUS co-operates with the West Pomeranian Voivodeship.

The goal of the project is to build a common ground for mathematics and the art of photography, to support mathematical education, mathematical thinking, and popularization of mathematical knowledge and culture. Participation in the competition is free of charge and open to everyone. A main point of the competition is the connection of the picture with the author’s description of it. A description (which can already be contained in the title) will switch the category of the photographic work from a pure image to a pair (image, text) which gives the work a cognitive aspect.

The competitors are divided into two age groups (below and over 20 years of age). To take part in the competition one has to register on the web site www.mnnk2.usz.edu.pl, enter one’s email address, wait for an activation link sent by email, then fill the registration form. The pictures (not more than six) should be uploaded on the provided web page.

One can register as an ambassador. These are people who help others with the creation of accounts, the login procedure, submitting and signing photos, and who advertize the competition. They can be adults (like parents and educators) as well as students. They register in the system as ambassadors. Competitors may choose the name of their ambassador; every photo linked to an ambassador will raise their position in the ranking. The most active ambassadors will receive the honorary title “Ambassador of Mathematics in Focus”.

The authors of the most interesting works and the most active ambassadors will receive prizes, nominations to expositions, calendars, books and original diplomas. In 2017 the main rewards will be
Apple MacBooks funded by NASK (“Research and Academic Computer Network”, a Polish research and development organization and data networks operator). The remaining prizes are tablets, e-book readers, backpacks, books and various smaller items. Since the year 2015 there is a special prize awarded by the president of the Polish Mathematical Society for the photo with the most interesting mathematical description.
